Hidden in the highlands above Henrietta, the Tamarind Falls — known locally as the Seven Waterfalls — form one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Mauritius. Seven cascades tumble down a deep, forested gorge carved by the Tamarin river, feeding a chain of pools that sit far from the coastal resorts most visitors ever see. The hike descends through eucalyptus, guava and endemic vegetation, with river crossings and stretches of rock underfoot. Viewpoints along the route open onto the valley and the falls below, and there are opportunities to stop and swim in the natural pools — some of the finest freshwater bathing on the island. Your guide leads the way throughout: the trails are unmarked, the terrain is uneven and slippery in places, and a guide is essential here rather than optional. The route rewards moderate fitness and a willingness to get wet. Departures are in the morning, when light falls into the gorge and conditions are at their best. Bring shoes with grip that you don't mind soaking, swimwear, water and a dry change of clothes.
