About this experience
Set on a working sugarcane estate in the volcanic hills of Chamarel, this distillery produces rum the traditional way: from freshly pressed cane juice rather than molasses, giving its rums a distinct, grassy character closer to agricole-style rum than the sweeter styles found elsewhere. The visit follows the full production process, from the sugarcane fields surrounding the site to the crushing mill, fermentation vats, copper stills and ageing cellar. Guides explain each stage and the decisions behind them — harvest timing, fermentation length, distillation cuts — that shape the final spirit. The tour ends in the tasting room, with a guided sampling of the distillery's range, from white and spiced rums to aged and flavoured expressions. A boutique on site sells bottles to take home. Chamarel sits in the heart of the south-west, close to the Seven Coloured Earth and Black River Gorges, and the distillery combines easily with either as part of a half-day itinerary.
