About this experience

Le Morne Brabant is more than a mountain. Rising 556 metres above the south-west coast, its caves and cliffs sheltered maroons — slaves who escaped the plantations — through the 18th and 19th centuries, and the peak became a symbol of resistance. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The hike starts near the International Slave Route Monument and climbs gradually through dry forest and endemic vegetation before steepening into rock and scree. The final stretch opens onto the plateau, where the reward is one of the finest panoramas in the Indian Ocean: the turquoise Le Morne lagoon, the reef line, Îlot Fourneau, and the celebrated "underwater waterfall" illusion created by sand shifting along the ocean shelf. Along the way your guide shares the history of the site — the maroon communities, the legend attached to the abolition of slavery in 1835, and the mountain's place in Mauritian identity today. Departures are early morning for cooler conditions and clearer light. Moderate fitness required. Bring: walking shoes with grip, water, sun protection, a hat.
