Understanding the Seasons

Mauritius enjoys a tropical maritime climate with two main seasons: a warm, humid summer from November to April and a cool, dry winter from May to October. Coastal temperatures average around 26°C in summer and 20°C in winter, making the island pleasant at almost any time of year.

The central plateau is consistently a few degrees cooler than the coast, so if you're planning hikes or inland excursions, pack a light layer regardless of the season.

Summer (November – April): Best for Beaches & Diving

Summer brings warm sea temperatures perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Visibility underwater is excellent from December to March, making it the prime season for exploring the coral reefs and marine life around Blue Bay and the northern islands.

However, this is also the cyclone season. Tropical storms are most likely between January and March. They rarely strike directly, but they can bring heavy rain and strong winds for a few days. Most hotels and operators are well-prepared, and activities are quickly rescheduled once the weather clears.

Winter (May – October): Best for Whale Watching & Hiking

Winter is the driest and most comfortable time for outdoor activities. Humidity drops, and the trade winds keep the air fresh — ideal for hiking Le Pouce, Black River Gorges, or exploring the Chamarel area.

It's also the best season for whale watching. Sperm whales and humpback whales are frequently sighted off the west coast between July and September. Book a dedicated whale-watching excursion from Tamarin or Black River for the best chance of an encounter.

Shoulder Months: The Sweet Spot

If you want the best of both worlds, consider visiting in October–November or April–May. The weather is warm and stable, the crowds are thinner, and you'll often find better rates on accommodation and activities.

These shoulder months are particularly good for watersports like kitesurfing and windsurfing, as the wind is consistent but not overwhelming.

Quick Summary

• Beaches & diving: November to April • Whale watching: July to September • Hiking & outdoor activities: May to October • Best overall value: October–November, April–May
